IxSystems published distribution Truenas Scale 24.10, which utilizes the Linux kernel and the Debian package base. This marks a shift from previous products by the company, such as TrueOS, PC-BSD, Truenas, and Freenas, which were based on FreeBSD. Similar to Truenas Core (Freenas), Truenas Scale can be downloaded and used for free. The size of the ISO image is 1.4 GB. Specific assembly texts for Truenas Scale scenarios, Web interface, and layout have been published on GitHub.
The editors of Truenas Scale, now based on Linux, have become the primary focus. The Truenas Core branch, based on FreeBSD, has shifted to maintenance mode to address errors and security issues for the foreseeable future. Development of new features and components will now take place in the Truenas Scale branch. Truenas Scale is not the only Linux-based option for Freenas – in 2009, Freenas spawned the OpenMediaVault distribution, which also transitioned to the Linux kernel and Debian package base.
Truenas Scale introduces the ability to create storage pools across multiple nodes, expanding beyond the single server limitation of Truenas Core (Freenas). In addition to enhanced scalability, Truenas Scale offers isolated containers, streamlined infrastructure, and support for building software-defined infrastructures. The file system in Truenas Scale is ZFS (OpenZFS), with support for Docker containers, KVM virtualization, and scalability using a distributed Gluster file system.
