Developers of the project Raspberry Pi presented a new version of the distribution raspberry pi os 2024-10-22 (raspbian) based on the Debian 12 package base and Linux 6.6 nucleus. In repositories about 35 thousand packages are available. Three assemblies were prepared for loading – abbreviated ( 438 MB ) for server systems, with a base desktop ( 1.1 GB ) and Complete with an additional set of applications (2.9 GB) available for 32- and 64-bit architectures. Additionally, an update was formed for the old edition of Raspberry Pi OS (Legacy), based on the Linux 6.1 core and the DEBIAN 11 package base.
Key changes :
- The desktop environment has been transferred to the use of the LabWC composite server based on the Wlroots library from the SWAY project and offering functionality, similar to the OpenBox window manager. The new composite server using Wayland is involved both in the assemblies for old boards that were previously supplied with the X-server and the OpenBox window manager and in the Raspberry Pi 4/5 boards previously transferred to Wayfire.
It is noted that at first the developers of Raspberry Pi OS tried to adapt Wayfire to work with all boards, but it was not able to combine it with the graphic capabilities of old boards. The LABWC project was more suitable for working with old Raspberry Pi boards and, together with the developers of Labwwc and Wlroots, managed to bring the performance of the graphic shell RASPBERRY PI OS on top of the LABWC to the performance of the X-server option.
