The release of a specialized browser Tor Browser 14.0 has been announced, featuring a transition to the ESR-test Firefox 128. This browser is designed to prioritize confidentiality and safety, redirecting all traffic exclusively through the Tor network. By avoiding direct connections through the standard network, the browser mitigates the risk of network system parameter access in the event of a hack. Users are encouraged to use products like Whonix to prevent any possible leaks. Assemblies of Tor Browser are available for Linux, Android, Windows, and MacOS.
To enhance protection, the Tor Browser includes an “HTTPS Only” setting for traffic encryption on compatible sites. Additionally, to reduce the threat of JavaScript-based attacks and block plugins, noscript is included in the kit. For combating blocking and traffic inspection, fteproxy and OBFS4PROXY are provided. Alternative transports are also available to establish an encrypted communication channel, blocking all traffic except HTTP.
To safeguard against user tracking and uniquely identifying features, various APIs and telemetry means have been disabled in the new version. These include Webgl, Webgl2, Webaudio, Social, SpeechSynthesis, Touch, Audiocontext, Mediastream, Canv As, Sharedworker, Webaudio, Permissions, Mediadevices.enumeratedevices, Screen.orientation, Pocket, Reader View, HTTP Alternate-Services, MOZTCPSocket, “Link REL = PRECONNECT,” and modified LIBMDNS.
In the latest version:
- The browser has transitioned to the Firefox 128 ESR Code, replacing the previous use of Firefox 115. An audit of Firefox changes has been conducted, addressing over 200 potential issues that could impact confidentiality and safety.
- For the Android version, a “New Circuit” button has been added to the menu, allowing users to update the chain of nodes through which traffic is routed on the Tor network for accessing specific sites. This feature enhances anonymity by presenting requests from different IP addresses. Previously, node updates were done through a fixed notification, but now it is integrated into the standard Tor Browser menu.
- Following Mozilla’s extension of the ESR support for Firefox 115 until March 2025, a similar extension has been made for
