Recently, Cyprus successfully thwarted a cyberattack on the government portal, designed to disrupt access to online state services. The attack was part of a series of incidents targeting both state and private companies in the country over a period of three days.
The Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy in Cyprus credited the prompt and coordinated efforts of specialists for preventing the attack from causing significant damage. The attackers’ primary objective was to block access to various government websites.
During the DDOS attack, the GOV.CY portal experienced a temporary disruption in service, but other government sites managed to fend off the attack and continued to operate normally. The ministry did not disclose the identities of the attackers or their potential motives.
This incident occurred in the context of other cyberattacks reported in Cyprus the previous day. Hackers attempted to disrupt the operations of electric and telecommunication services, as well as the Hermes airports operator and fuel company Eko Cyprus Ltd. Fortunately, all these efforts were unsuccessful, and there were no breaches of customer data.
