Phosh 0.41.0 Released: GNOME Corruption for Smartphones

Phosh 0.41 has been released, introducing new features and improvements to the screen shell for mobile devices based on GNOME technology and GTK library. Initially developed by Purism as an alternative to Gnome Shell for the Librem 5 smartphone, Phosh has evolved into one of the unofficial GNOME projects and is now utilized in Postmarketos, Mobian, certain firmware for Pine64 devices, and smartphone editorial offices. Phosh utilizes the composite server phoc, operating on top of Wayland, along with its own screen keyboard. The project is distributed under the gplv3+ license.

In the new release:

  • In the multimedia player, users now have an indication of the playback state, position, and size of the track.
  • A Wi-Fi Hotspot button has been added to the fast settings panel for quick access.
  • A new interface for connecting and disconnecting known Bluetooth devices is available in the fast settings panel.
  • Users can now switch the phone to silent mode by pressing the volume down button during an incoming call.
  • More vertical screen space has been provided in the fast settings, making it easier to navigate through extensive lists of wireless networks or Bluetooth devices.
  • The Phosh-Mobile-Settings configurator now includes an option to display the battery charge as a percentage in the upper panel. Additionally, users can use the camera flash to indicate notifications and utilize the volume down button to activate silent mode.
  • In Phosh-Sosk-Stub, users can now close the screen keyboard with a screen gesture “shift” and access a wider range of supported keyboard layouts. The option to access screen keyboard settings from a pop-up menu has also been added.
