Forgejo Platform Shifts from MIT to GPLV3 License

The developers of the joint development platform Forgejo announced a change in the licensing starting with release 9.0. Moving forward, new developments of the project will be extended to copywriters under the GPLV3+ license instead of the previously used MIT A Primesky License. The old Forgejo branches, as well as correcting versions based on them, will remain under the MIT license. This change in the license is expected to simplify the involvement of code distributed under coplet-licenses in the project. Read more

In preparation for the release of 8.0, the developers discovered dependencies distributed under coplet-licenses that were incompatible with the MIT license, leading to the exclusion of these dependencies from the release. Code related to supporting the APA quoting format and the engine drawing by the library elkjs were affected. The shift to the GPLV3 license will allow for the reinstatement of excluded dependencies, utilization of existing code, and enhancement of Forgejo functionality. Learn more

The transition to the GPLV3 license is aimed at reducing the risk of unscrupulous business practices, such as creating modified Forgejo versions with additional restrictions. This change also aligns with last year’s initiative by the developers to allow changes for coplet licenses. Users who install Forgejo from distribution packages or compile the platform from original texts, as well as service providers hosting code based on Forgejo, will not be affected by the license change. Forgejo is a project developing a platform that enables the deployment of a system for working with Git repositories on its servers, similar to GitHub, Bitbucket, and Gitlab. Originating as a fork of the Gitea project, which is itself a fork of GOGS, Forgejo was created in 2022 after unsuccessful attempts to commercialize Gitea. The platform emphasizes independent management principles and community control. The maintenance of Forgejo is now overseen by Git hosting service codeberg.org. More information
