Authorities Ordered Providers to Slow YouTube: Inadmissible Speed

Significant Slowdown of YouTube in Russia
On August 1, Russian Internet providers began notifying their subscribers about a significant slowdown in the work of YouTube, warning of potential complete closure of access to Google services in the future. The ONS24 Internet service provider was among the first to take action, citing a “government decision”.
ONS24 contacted its users, explaining that due to a government decree, access to Google services, including YouTube, had significantly slowed down. The provider emphasized that they had no control over the situation and urged users to be understanding. Furthermore, they warned that access to all Google services could be shut down completely in the future, and recommended alternative platforms.
Internet users reacted swiftly to this news. Many expressed dissatisfaction and disbelief in the official explanation of technical issues with Google equipment. Users criticized the government for allegedly forcing providers to deliberately slow down access to Google services, without any further justification.
Some ONS24 subscribers also complained about the overall quality of the provider’s services, noting that slow loading times extended beyond YouTube to other applications. They claimed that switching to mobile data showed normal loading speeds, indicating issues on the provider’s end.
