In August 2024, the Python programming language achieved a milestone by reaching a new record in the Tiobe index, surpassing 18% in popularity for the first time. This achievement has not been seen since Java’s success in November 2016. Despite Python’s growth, Java still holds the absolute record with 26.49% set in June 2001, remaining unmatched by any other language.
Python now leads the index with an 8% difference from its closest competitor, C++, which is one of the largest gaps between the first and second place in the index. Python’s success can be attributed to its ease of learning and high demand for programmers. Paul Jansen, the General Director of Tiobe, predicts that Python is on track to become the most popular programming language of all time.
While other languages like Rust and Kotlin are quickly rising in the rankings and approaching the top 10, Jansen believes it will take them a significant amount of time to pose a real challenge to Python.
The Tiobe index evaluates the popularity of programming languages monthly based on factors like the number of qualified engineers, courses, and third-party suppliers using various websites for analysis. It’s important to note that the Tiobe index reflects popularity and not necessarily the quality of a programming language.
