Linux Market Share Hits 4.45%, Says STATCOUNTER

According to Statcounter data, which tracks global web browser usage on desktops, Linux distributions have surpassed a market share of 4.45%. This data is collected through monitoring 1.5 million websites. In March, Linux desktops crossed the 4% mark, and by June, they held a 4.05% share.

Meanwhile, the Chrome OS operating system has experienced a decline in popularity, with its market share dropping from 4% to 1.41% over the past 12 months. When considering all operating systems, including mobile platforms, Android leads the way with a 45.19% share (up from 43.74% six months ago), followed by Windows at 25.98% (down from 27.39%), iOS at 18.35% (up from 17.82%), MacOS at 5.37% (down from 5.87%), and Linux at 1.61% (up from 1.54%).

Additional statistics from other sources reveal:

  • On the Steam gaming platform, the share of Linux users is 2.08% (up from 1.76% six months ago and 1.44% a year ago). Among Linux distributions on Steam OS, Ubuntu leads with 22.04%, Arch Linux follows with 0.17%, Linux Mint with 0.11%, Manjaro Linux with 0.06%, and Debian GNU/Linux with 0.05%.
  • According to Wikimedia data, the share of Linux users ranges from 2.1% to 2.4% (up from 1.9% to 2.2% six months ago), while Chrome OS ranges from 0.7% to 1.8% (down from 1.8% to 2.2%).
  • The W3Schools.com ranking by March-Martovsky rates Linux at 4.1% and Chrome OS at 0.6%.
