Ubuntu Touch OTA-5 Focal Firmware Launched

After six months of development, the ubports project, which took over the development of the Ubuntu Touch mobile platform from Canonical, has presented firmware OTA-5 FOCAL (Over-the-Air). This release marks the fourth version of Ubuntu Touch, based on the Ubuntu package base 04.04. The project is also developing an experimental port of the desktop unity 8, which is now renamed as lomiri.

Ubuntu Touch OTA-5 Focal will soon be available for devices such as Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, F (X) Tec Pro1 X, Fairphone 3/3+/4, Google Pixel 3a/3a XL, JingPad A1, OnePlus 5/5t/6T, Sony Xperia X, VOLLAPHONE X/22/ X23, and Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC / X3. However, assemblies for OnePlus One, Samsung Galaxy S7, Xiaomi Redmi Note 9/9 Pro/9 Pro Max/9s, and Xiaomi Poco M2 Pro will not be formed for this release.

The focus of this release is on correcting errors. Some of the notable changes include:

  • A fix for the issue with settings transfer during migration from Ubuntu Touch based on Ubuntu 16.04 to Ubuntu Touch OTA-5 Focal based on Ubuntu 20.04.
  • Introduction of notifications for calendar synchronization failures due to authentication problems, allowing users to enter a new password.
