The release of the classic initialization system Sysvinit 3.10 has been announced. This system was widely used in Linux distributions before the introduction of Systemd and Upstart. It is still utilized in distributions like Devuan, Debian Gnu/Hurd, and Antix. Sysvinit 3.10 is written in the si language and is available under the GPLv2 license. The release did not bring any changes to the versions of Sysvinit used alongside the InSServ and Startpar utilities. InSServ is responsible for managing dependencies between init scripts, while Startpar ensures the parallel launch of multiple scripts during system boot.
In this latest version of Sysvinit, SigrtMin+4 has been included, along with the initiation of the “Shutdown -hp Now” command for termination of operations upon receiving this signal. The implementation of the Sigrtmin+4 signal handling was necessary to address the occurrence of Systemd generating when users executed the Machinectl Stop command to shut down the system. Additionally, this new release resolves a problem in the bootlogd process that caused bloating when attempting to record without actually performing the recording operation.
