Technogumanism: Tackling 21st Century Challenges

Jason Crawford, founder Institute of Roots of Progress:
Jason Crawford, founder of the Institute of Roots of Progress, presented his new book “Technician-Humanistic Manifesto”. The first chapter of the book is already available on the site Freethink. In his book, the author proposes to reevaluate the current state of progress in mankind, highlighting a deep distrust in society’s capabilities despite significant achievements.

Humanity now possesses incredible power, with daily actions appearing almost magical compared to those available to our ancestors. From air travel to instant long-distance communication to advanced medical treatments, science and technology have revolutionized our lives. We live in an era of miraculous advancements, yet what was once considered “progress” is now debated and questioned.

Some scientists and writers argue that scientific and technological progress has brought more harm than good. Articles like the 2014 piece in “The Atlantic” question whether progress has truly led to happiness and sustainable development, highlighting the negative impacts of the industrial revolution. Authors like Jared Diamond and historians like Christopher Lash have expressed doubts about the true nature of progress, with some even calling agriculture “the worst mistake in the history of mankind.”

These critical views have begun to influence public opinion, with studies showing that many individuals in Western countries no longer believe in progress and think life was better 200 years ago. Young people, in particular, exhibit pessimism about the future and fear that humanity is headed towards disaster. Surveys on climate change reveal deep concerns among the youth about the future, with a significant portion believing that humanity is doomed.
