Many users are wondering: “Why pay for VPN when there are free options?” However, are really free VPN completely free? According to recent report by “Kaspersky Laboratory”, the reality is that free services often have hidden risks, as demonstrated by several major incidents.
In May 2024, the FBI, along with law enforcement agencies, exposed Botnet 911 S5, which covered 19 million unique IP addresses in over 190 countries. The creators of this botnet used several free VPN services such as MASKVPN, DWVPN, Paladinvpn, Proxygate, ShieldVPN, and ShineVPN. Users who installed these applications unknowingly turned their devices into proxy servers used by cybercriminals for illegal activities like cyber attacks, money laundering, and fraud.
Botnet 911 S5 started its operations in May 2014 and was built on free VPN applications circulated online since 2011. In 2022, law enforcement temporarily shut down Botnet only for it to reappear under a new name – Cloudrouter.
In May 2024, the FBI not only exposed the Botnet infrastructure but also arrested its organizers. Botnet earned its creators almost $100 million and caused billions in damages to victims.
In March 2024, a similar scheme was uncovered involving several dozen applications on Google Play, including many free VPNs like Lite VPN, Byte Blade VPN, Blazestride, and FastFly VPN. These apps also turned user devices into proxy servers without their knowledge.
While these VPN applications are not available on Google Play anymore, they continue to be distributed through alternative sources like the APKPURE app store under different names and developers, making detection and removal challenging.
Cases of infected VPN applications highlight the hidden risks of using free services. If there is a need for VPN protection without wanting to pay for it, it’s advisable to opt for verified free versions from reputable companies. However, the most secure option is always purchasing a paid subscription for a high-quality VPN service, ensuring high speed, reliable protection, and additional security features that free services may lack.
