The OpenMandriva project recently released OpenMandriva Rome 24.07, featuring a continuous delivery of updates known as Rolling-missiles. This release allows users to access new versions of packages developed for the OpenMandriva LX 6 branch without waiting for the creation of a traditional distribution. The ISO-images, ranging from 2.1-3.4 GB in size, can be downloaded from SourceForge and come with KDE, GNOME, and LXQT desktop support for Live mode. Assemblies for KDE and LXQT are available in X86_64 and Znver1 options (optimized for AMD Ryzen, Threadripper, and EPYC processors), with KDE options including Plasma 6 X11, Plasma 6 Wayland, and Plasma 5. Future plans include releasing assemblies for ARM64-based boards.
Key features of the release include the default KDE Plasma 6 desktop, based on KDE Plasma 6.1.3, KDE Frameworks 6.4.0, KDE GEARS 24.05.2, and QT 6.7.2. Users can also opt for assemblies with KDE Plasma 5.27.11, KDE Frameworks 5.116, KDE GEARS 08.23.5, and QT 5.15.14. The release uses a graphic stack based on X11, though an ISO-image with KDE Plasma 6 on Wayland (still considered immature for most users) is available. Additionally, updated versions of the LXQT 2.0.0 and GNOME 46.3 user environments are included.
Furthermore, graphic stack components have been updated to Xorg Server 21.1.13, Wayland 1.23.0, and Mesa 24.1.4, while system components such as the Linux 6.10.0 core (compiled with Clang instead of GCC), Systemd 255.7, LLVM/Clang 18.1.8, Binutils 2.42, GCC 14.1.0, Glibc 2.39, and Java 22 have been refreshed. The installer was also updated to Calamares 3.3.8.
Users can look forward to updated applications such as Libreoffice 24.2.5 (with QT 6 and KDE Plasma 6 integration), Falkon 05.24.2, Firefox 128.0, Chromium 126.0.6478.182, QMPLAY2 06.24.16, Telegram DESKTOP 5.1.7, Krita 5.2.3, GIMP
