KaOS has recently released its Issue kaos 2024.07, a distribution known for its continuous update model that focuses on delivering a desktop experience based on the latest KDE issues and applications using QT. One notable design feature of the distribution is the vertical panel placed on the right side of the screen. While KaOS is inspired by Arch Linux, it maintains its own independent repository with over 1,500 packages and offers several of its own graphic utilities. The default file system used is XFS, and the assemblies are published for x86_64 systems with a size of 3.7 GB.
Features of KaOS include:
- UEFI systems utilize Systemd-boot for loading.
- An ISOWRITER interface is provided for recording ISO files onto USB disks, with support for verifying correctly recorded images.
- The default package includes LibreOffice assembled with VCL-plugins KF5 and QT5 to enable the use of native KDE and QT elements.
- A welcoming Croeso system is offered for initial setup and configuration after installation.
- The XFS file system is used by default with CRC integrity check and a separate BTREE index of free Inode.
- Verification of loaded ISO files through digital signatures is an available option.
- A Wayland launch option is implemented for abandoning X11 components in the future.
- The installer allows automatic disk partitioning with a choice of FS (XFS, Ext4, BTRFS, and ZFS) without manual intervention.
- The Phonon-MPV backend in the Phonon sound library supports QT 6.
- The GTK2 library has been removed from the repositories, with applications like Ardour transitioning to internal GTK usage.
In the new version, desktop components have been updated to QT 6.7.2, KDE Plasma to 6.1.3, KDE Frameworks to 6.4.0, and KDE Gear to 24.2.
