Goo.gl Shuts Down

Google has officially announced the completion of the URL shortening service Goo.gl. The generation of new links stopped in March 2019, and as of August 25, 2025, all existing GOO.GL links will no longer work, resulting in an error 404.

The decision to shut down the service was made in 2018, with all users, including developers, no longer able to create new links or access analytics and settings for existing ones.

Beginning on August 23, 2024, users clicking on goo.gl links will receive a notification stating “This link will stop working soon.” By clicking “Continue,” users can proceed to the link or choose the option to not show the message again.

Developers have been warned by Google that the intermediate page notification could impact the functionality of current goo.gl links. The presence of the intermediate page may interfere with proper redirects if other 302 redirects are in place and could hinder the display of metadata for social networks on target pages. Google advises developers to transition to alternative solutions promptly.

For those significantly affected by the intermediate page, Google suggests adding the parameter “Si = 1” to existing goo.gl links to bypass the notification page.

In 2018, Google recommended developers switch to Firebase Dynamic Links, which automatically direct users to the appropriate website or application based on their platform. However, this service has also been discontinued for developers.

Therefore, users and developers are advised to seek alternative solutions and replace goo.gl links well in advance of the final termination in August 2025.
