Hostapd, WPA_SUPPLICANT 2.11 Wireless Protocols Released

After two and a half years of development published release hostapd/wpa_supPlicant 2.11, a set to ensure the operation of wireless protocols IEEE 802.1x, WPA, WPA2, WPA3, and EAP. The set includes the wpa_supPlicant to connect to the client and the background process hotapd to ensure the operation of the access point and authentication server, including components such as WPA Authenticator, client/authentication server, EAP server. The initial texts of the project are distributed under the license BSD.

The main changes in the new releases of Hostapd and WPA_SUPPLICANT:

  • The initial support was added wi-fi 7 (Eht/IEEE 802.11BE) and improved support wi-fi 6 (he/ieee 802.11ax).
  • Added support for the third version of the DPP Protocol (Device Provisioning Protocol), known in everyday life as “Wi-Fi Easy Connect“, as well as the possibility of transmitting parameters with Wi-Fi settings using DPP. The DPP protocol provides the possibility of simplified tuning wireless devices without a screen interface, using another more advanced device already connected to a wireless network. DPP is based on the use of authentication by open keys, for example, parameters for IoT-device without a screen can be set from a smartphone based on a QR code printed on the case and an open key encoding.
  • Added support for changes in the API proposed in the branch of the cryptographic library Openssl 3.0.
  • In the implementation of the authentication protocols EAP -SIM (Extensible Authentication Protocol – Subscriber Identity Module)
