The non-profit organization Apache Software Foundation, known for providing a neutral and independent environment for the development of numerous open-source products, recently made a significant announcement regarding a revamp of its logo. The organization has decided to remove the image of a pen, which has been a symbol of Apache projects since 1997. The new logo will be chosen through a voting process among the members of the organization and is set to be revealed on October 7th at the Community Over Code conference.
The decision to change the logo stems from discontent expressed by NATIVES in Tech, an organization advocating for the interests of indigenous peoples. They have raised concerns about the use of Indian symbolism in the Apache Software Foundation logo, viewing it as a misrepresentation of cultural values and reliance on stereotypes. While there were demands from the group to rename the organization and cease using the word “Apache,” the community has thus far only agreed to rename the ApacheCon conference to Community Over Code. Renaming the entire organization was deemed to be logistically challenging and costly.
