Thunderbird Unveils Mail Client 128

A year after the publication of the last significant issue was released, Thunderbird 128, a postal client developed by community forces and based on Mozilla technology. Thunderbird 128 is built on the code base of the ESR release of Firefox 128 and is classified as a version with long-term support, with updates produced throughout the year.

Main changes in Thunderbird 128 include:

  • Added the ability to develop components in Rust, aiming to reduce errors when working with memory, improve performance, and integrate into the existing ecosystem for email related modules developed in Rust. Also, Exchange Web Services (EWS) support was added, eliminating the need for third-party add-ons for Microsoft Exchange. Built-in support for MS Exchange will be activated in a future release of 128.x.
  • The vertical layout design for the list of messages (Card View) has been modernized with a mobile interface style. Simplified navigation on email threads, automatic card height adjustment, indication of unread messages with a green dot, and new messages with a yellow star have been added.

  • The capabilities of the panel displaying postal folders have been expanded, speeding up redirection and searching in unified folders. Users can now select multiple folders at once.
