Rostelecom has disclosed technical issues affecting equipment owned by Google and used by the operator on the network infrastructure, as well as in the exchange of traffic between communication operators. The problems have the potential to impact YouTube in Russia, as reported by TASS.
According to a statement from the company, the equipment in question is utilized for caching and accelerating the loading of Google content, primarily YouTube, through the Google Global Cache system.
The statement further explains that the malfunction of this equipment, alongside the inability to expand it amid traffic growth, has resulted in a significant overload of existing capacities, including at peering joints. Consequently, this overload may affect the download speed and playback quality of videos on YouTube for subscribers of all Russian communication operators.
