Microsoft has recently announced a new policy affecting its employees in China, stating that starting from September 2024, employees will only be able to use iPhones for work purposes, excluding Android devices. This decision, aimed at enhancing security measures, will impact hundreds of employees in the region. The news was reported by Bloomberg.
According to an internal memo, Chinese employees at Microsoft will be mandated to use Apple devices to verify their identity when accessing the company’s systems. This directive is part of Microsoft’s Secure Future Initiative, designed to ensure all employees utilize Microsoft Authenticator Password and Identity Pass for additional security.
The primary reasons behind this move are the proliferation of Android applications in China and the disparities between the Chinese and global mobile ecosystems. Unlike iOS, Google Play services are inaccessible in China, prompting local manufacturers such as Huawei and Xiaomi to develop their own platforms. Microsoft restricts access to corporate resources from Chinese devices due to the absence of Google services.
Employees currently using Android devices, including those from Huawei and Xiaomi, will be provided with iPhone 15 as a replacement. The new smartphones will be distributed across China, including Hong Kong where Google services are available.
Microsoft has refrained from making any public statements or responding to inquiries from Bloomberg regarding the rationale behind this transition. Nevertheless, the tech giant has been proactively bolstering its security protocols following a series of cyber attacks purportedly sponsored by foreign entities.
