APPLE MAY FACE MANDATE TO INCLUDE RUSTORE ON IOS

State Duma deputies have put forward a new bill with the goal of preventing Russian developers from being excluded from the App Store, ensuring the potential launch of Rustore on Apple devices. Deputy Anton Gorelkin shared this development on his Telegram channel.

Gorelkin highlighted a similar law adopted in the European Union in 2022, called the law on digital markets (DMA), which compelled Apple to introduce certain functionalities in iOS. As a result, European users could access Altstore Pal in April, serving as an imperfect yet functional alternative to the App Store.

The proposed bill dictates that the sale of “certain types of technically complex goods” should only be permitted if installation and app updates can be done through a “single store.” Rustore, currently limited to Android, is specifically mentioned in the document. Furthermore, the bill allows for payments to be made through Rustore.

Additionally, the bill prohibits the imposition of conditions that would restrict or prevent the use of Russian applications and a single store. These conditions include limitations on searching and updating applications, adjusting app settings, receiving notifications, and completing payments.

Gorelkin disclosed that a version of Rustore for iOS has already been developed and could potentially debut on the Apple platform once the law is enacted. The bill is anticipated to take effect on September 1, 2025, following a period for Apple to ensure compliance.
