Google is testing a new feature called Digital Credential API for Chrome on Android, allowing websites to request users’ personal data from their mobile wallet. This new option aims to enhance the personality verification process, offering users a high level of security and convenience.
According to Google, the Digital Credential API provides access to protected document storage, such as passports, driver’s licenses, and other loaded documents. Users can share their data directly from their mobile wallet, eliminating the need to manually upload documents to sites. This API enables websites to securely receive real personality data through the Android Credential Manager. When a site requires user data, the request will be displayed directly in the browser, allowing users to control which data to share.
The use of Digital Credential API in Chrome on Android contributes to the digitalization of documents and public services, aligning with the requirements of online services and regulations like eIDAS and rules for age verification. This API supports multiple certificates and is compatible with various mobile wallet applications. Additional mechanisms will be introduced to enhance data protection and prevent large-scale abuse.
Google is continuing to test the new feature and promises to release more details soon. The implementation of Digital Credential API has the potential to streamline online identification and verification processes, making them more reliable and user-friendly.
