The Higher School of Enterprise (HSE) in Russia made history by being the first university in the country to adopt a declaration of ethical principles for creating and using artificial intelligence systems. The Academic Council at HSE officially approved the document on June 26, 2024. The declaration is intended to guide all participants in the educational process on the ethical and responsible use of AI.
The declaration outlines several key principles to ensure ethical conduct when utilizing AI technology. These principles include prioritizing human communication, promoting conscious use of AI by teaching employees and students its capabilities and limitations, maintaining academic honesty by using AI as a tool and not a replacement for natural intelligence, promoting transparency in disclosing the use of AI in projects, safeguarding privacy and intellectual property, preventing bias and discrimination in AI applications, ensuring fair access to AI for all participants in the educational process, recognizing the risks and consequences of AI use, and enforcing responsible behavior in accordance with university laws and regulations.
Sergei Roshchin, the Vice President of VNU VSHE, expressed optimism that the declaration set forth by HSE would serve as a model for other educational institutions in Russia. He also anticipates that the principles outlined in the declaration will lead to the development of specific recommendations and methodologies in various fields of AI.
