PHOSH 0.40 Introduces GNOME-Crimement for Smartphones

The latest release of Phosh 0.40, a screen shell for mobile devices based on GNOME technology and the GTK library, has been published. Originally developed by Purism as an analogue of Gnome Shell for the Librem 5 smartphone, Phosh has now become one of the unofficial GNOME projects and is widely used in Postmarketos, Mobian, some firmware for Pine64 devices, and smartphone editorial offices. Phosh utilizes the composite server phoc, which runs on top of Wayland, and has its own screen keyboard. All projects within Phosh are distributed under the GPL v3+ license.

In the new release of Phosh 0.40:

  • Fast settings have been added to enable dark mode and toggle data transmission through a mobile telecom network.
  • Implemented the ability to put the device into sleep mode while the screen is locked.
  • Reduced the time required to hold the power button to display the power menu.
  • Added the option to set a keyboard shortcut to take screenshots.
  • Modified certain Gsetting configurations related to inactivity time, unlocking SIM cards, and sound themes.
  • Introduced the option to install libraries necessary for Rust binding generation and defining lock screen classes in the Rust language.
  • Phoc now supports a quick finger gesture for screen orientation and panel alignment based on the device’s orientation.
  • Phoshmobile-settings configurator now allows users to activate lock screens and select interface element arrangements.
  • In gmobile, a processor for running GNOME on mobile devices, support for AVRCP Bluetooth Profile for headset volume control buttons has been added, along with support for Juno tablets, OnePlus 6/6T, and Pine64 Pinephone Pro. Improved support for Pine64 PinePhone smartphone is also included.
