Lockbit has claimed responsibility for the cyberattack on the largest hospital in KBC ZaGREB Cherence, leading to the institution having to shut down its IT systems for the entire day. The attackers stated that they accessed patient and employee information, medical records from donors, donor bodies, and contracts with third-party companies.
The incident caused significant disruptions in the hospital’s operations, with more than 100 specialists working on restoring the systems. Local media reports indicated that the attack affected emergency services and led KBC Zagreb to transfer patients to other medical facilities in Zagreb. The hospital likened the aftermath of the attack to operating 50 years ago, relying on paper and pencil.
KBC Zagreb highlighted that while most medical tests could proceed, the radiological system suffered the most due to its reliance on IT support. Serving approximately 10,000 people daily, the hospital faced substantial challenges as a result of the cyberattack.
The Croatian Ministry of Internal Affairs mentioned that investigators were not disclosing details about the attack, while confirming they had not been informed about any ransom demands. The Ministry of Health emphasized that the government would not engage in negotiations with hackers primarily driven by financial motives. The extent of any data breach concerning Croatian citizens remains unknown, with Croatian authorities currently investigating the incident.
