Creator of Puppy Linux Releases EasyOS 6.0

Barry Kauler Publishes Easyos 6.0 Distribution

Barry Kauler, the founder of the Puppy Linux project, has recently released a new distribution called Easyos 6.0. This distribution combines the technology of Puppy Linux with container insulation for launching system components. The distribution is controlled through a set of graphic configurators developed by the project. The size of the loading image is 905 Mb, and it can be accessed here.

Features of the Easyos 6.0 distribution include:

  • Each application, as well as the desktop itself, can be launched in separate containers using the Easy Containers mechanism for isolation.
  • The system works with Root rights by default, with privileges being discharged when starting each application.
  • The distribution is installed in a separate subcatalog and can coexist with other data on the drive.
  • Individual subcatalogs, such as /Home, can be conserved.
  • Meta-packets in SFS format can be installed, allowing for combined packages similar to AppImages, Snaps, and Flatpak.
  • The system is updated atomically and supports rollback of changes after updates.
  • There is a launch mode from RAM where the system is copied into memory during boot and operates without accessing disks.
  • The distribution is assembled using Woofq tools and initial texts of packages from the OpenEmbedded project.
  • The desktop is based on the JWM window manager and the ROX file manager.
  • Applications like Firefox, LibreOffice, GIMP, Geany, and others are included in the distribution.
  • The Easyshare application is included to simplify file exchange and printer sharing.
