Dance in Darkness: Great Moon Standing 2024

In 2024, astronomy enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating a rare celestial event known as the “great lunar standing,” the first occurrence since 2006. This phenomenon involves the moon ascending to the extreme northern and southern points of the horizon, reaching maximum heights and inclinations in its 18.6-year cycle.

The “great lunar standing” is a result of the moon’s orbit being inclined at a 5.1-degree angle to the plane of the ecliptic, the path along which the Earth orbits the sun. This inclination causes the sunrise and sunset points to constantly shift by 57 degrees.

Additionally, the Earth is inclined at 23.4 degrees relative to the ecliptic, leading to seasonal changes in the sunrise and sunset positions by about 47 degrees over the course of a year.

When the moon and Earth reach their maximum inclinations relative to each other, the “great lunar standing” occurs. This period sees the moon rising and setting at the extreme points of its range on the horizon.

During this time, the moon follows a higher trajectory in the sky, resulting in longer durations above the horizon. In the Northern Hemisphere, the moon rises higher in the northeast during sunrise.

Ancient structures such as Stonehenge and Newgrinj were constructed with consideration for the extreme sunrise and sunset points during the “great standing,” highlighting the historical significance of this phenomenon.

In 2024, the great lunar stand will be most prominent around the equinoxes in September 2024 and March 2025. The best observations can be made during a full moon, when the moon rises at sunset and vice versa. Interesting alignments of sunrise, sunset points, and the full moon will occur on June 21 and December 15.

For optimal viewing, experts recommend selecting an open area with a low horizon. While telescopes and binoculars are not necessary, they can enhance the observation experience by allowing viewers to see intricate details of the moon’s illuminated surface.
