After a review of the decision, Mozilla has reversed its stance on the blocking of certain Firefox additions in the Addons.mozilla.org (AMO) catalog for users in the Russian Federation. The blocking was originally put in place at the request of Roskomnadzor and affected four popular additions that allowed users to utilize VPNs or proxies to access resources listed in the Unified Register of Forbidden Sites of the Russian Federation.
The decision to temporarily block these additions was made in order to assess the regulatory environment in Russia and the potential risks for the Mozilla community and employees. Mozilla was faced with a choice between complying with local legislation, which contradicted the principles outlined in the manifesto mozilla, or risking the potential blocking of Mozilla services in Russia for failing to adhere to requirements and promoting access to prohibited content. Ultimately, Mozilla decided to prioritize its principles, which view the Internet as a global public resource that should be open and accessible to all users, regardless of their location.
