Microsoft and IT companies have unveiled a new cybersecurity program that aims to support hospitals catering to over 60 million inhabitants in the United States. Developed in collaboration with the White House, the American Hospital Association (AHA), and the National Rural Health Association (NRHA), this initiative seeks to bolster the healthcare industry’s critical infrastructure in light of increasing cyber threats.
The necessity for enhanced protection arises from a significant uptick in hacker attacks targeting medical facilities. According to the NRHA, the use of ransomware attacks in the healthcare sector has surged by nearly 130%. Rural hospitals and clinics are particularly at risk due to their limited resources to combat cybercriminal activities.
As per a press release, Microsoft will offer discounted prices and substantial reductions on their security products for independent rural hospitals and emergency departments. These smaller establishments can avail discounts of up to 75% on cybersecurity solutions. For large rural hospitals currently utilizing Microsoft products, the company will provide a top-tier security package for one year, along with complimentary Windows 10 security updates during the same period.
Furthermore, Microsoft will conduct complimentary cybersecurity assessments to identify risks and vulnerabilities in rural hospitals. The company will also offer free training sessions for rural hospitals to enhance their daily system security management.
This new program supplements Microsoft’s existing efforts to advance healthcare. The Microsoft AI for Health program collaborates with non-profit organizations, researchers, and entities working on global health challenges to encourage telemedicine and enhance clinical decision-making and forecasting.
