After a year of development took place, the release of the distribution opensuse leap 15.6. The release is based on the SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP 6 binary package set with some user applications from the Opensus tumblewe Ed repository. The use of the same binary packets in SUSE and Opensuse simplifies the transition between distributions, saves resources for assembling packages, distribution of updates and testing, unifying differences in SPEC files, and allows users to move away from diagnosing different package assemblies when analyzing errors. To download the universal DVD-assembly, size 4.4 GB (x86_64, AARCH64, PPC64les, 390X), a trimmed image for installation with network boot (200 MB), and live-assembly (~ 900 MB) with KDE, GNOME, and XFCE for architectures X86_64 and ARM64.
It is expected that Opensuse Leap 15.6 will be the last release in the 15.x series, and in 2025, Opensuse Leap 16 will be based on the ALP platform. The key difference in ALP is the division of the distribution’s foundation into two parts: the core “Host OS” for working on hardware and a layer to support applications, focused on running in containers and virtual machines. The forthcoming development of another functional output in the Opensuse Leap 15 branch next year will provide developers with additional time to transition to the ALP platform.
