AMD TO LAUNCH AI MONSTER CHIP

At the recent Computex exhibition in Taibe, Taiwan, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) revealed their latest processors for artificial intelligence and outlined their chip development plans for the next two years. AMD’s General Director Lisa Su introduced the MI325X accelerator, set to be released in the fourth quarter of 2024.

The demand for advanced chips in data processing centers has surged in the quest to develop generative artificial intelligence programs. Based in Santa Clara, California, AMD is now gearing up to compete with NVIDIA, currently dominating about 80% of the AI chip market.

NVIDIA has been unveiling new chips annually since last year, and AMD is now following suit. Lisa Su emphasized, “Artificial intelligence is our number one priority. Every year we will introduce new products to ensure we have the most competitive portfolio.”

Looking ahead to 2025, AMD announced the Mi350 chip series, based on a new architecture. The upcoming Mi350 chips are expected to offer a 35-fold improvement in information processing compared to the current Mi300. In 2026, the MI400 series on the “Next” architecture will be launched.

Investors who have heavily invested in tech company stocks are eagerly anticipating updates from chip manufacturers for long-term growth. AMD shares have more than doubled since the beginning of 2023, although this gain pales in comparison to NVIDIA’s sevenfold increase during the same period.

In 2024, AMD expects AI chip sales to reach approximately $4 billion, exceeding previous estimates by $500 million. The company also announced that the new generation of “red” central processors (CPU) will be available in the second half of 2024.

Additionally, AMD introduced a new architecture for neural processors (NPU) designed to handle AI tasks on devices. Chipmakers are hopeful that the enhanced AI capabilities will drive growth in the PC market, which is gradually emerging from a long-term downturn.

HP and Lenovo are poised to be the first to launch devices featuring AMD chips that fully align with Microsoft Copilot+ requirements for PCs.
