One of the largest telecommunication companies, Frontier Communications, fell victim to a cyber attack in April, with over 2 million subscribers affected. The Ransomhub group claimed responsibility for the attack, where hackers infiltrated the operator systems and stole confidential data, such as names, addresses, social security numbers, and credit ratings.
Despite attempts by the hackers to initiate negotiations with Frontier for ransom, the company did not respond for two months. Subsequently, the cybercriminals decided to publish the stolen information on a leakage website, as reported by security researcher Brett Callow.
Frontier Communications acknowledged the cyber attack in a report filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in April, detailing unauthorized access to their IT systems on April 14 and the subsequent measures taken to contain the threat.
An investigation revealed that the attack was orchestrated by an experimental cybercrime group with access to a vast amount of personal data. The breach raises concerns about the safety and financial security of millions of Americans.
