Broadcom has translated the source codes of the GreenPlum DBMS to the archive on github, along with the repository of the DBMS and its projects and topics. This move indicates that the company has stopped developing the open product with the community. There have been no comments from Broadcom regarding this decision. It is expected that further development of GreenPlum will take place as a closed commercial project under the name vmware tanzu Greenplum.
GreenPlum DBMS is a distributed version of the open PostgreSQL DBMS, specifically optimized for parallel processing of analytical queries over large datasets (Data Warehouse). It utilizes a Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) architecture for parallel data processing, ensuring the scalability of the repository to petabyte sizes through server clusters. An open source alternative to GreenPlum is the DBMS cloudberry, which is a fork of GreenPlum based on the PostgreSQL 14 code base, offering enhanced functionality while maintaining compatibility with GreenPlum.
The GreenPlum DBMS is commonly used for replacing products that have exited the Russian market by various companies. Additionally, it serves as the foundation for the analytical DBMS Arenadata DB (ADB) developed by the Russian company Arenadat. According to a statement from Arenadat, the discontinuation of GreenPlum’s public development will not negatively impact the progress of Arenadata DB, as the company had prepared for such a scenario and has initiated the development of its own fork.
