11th ALTERNATIVE PLATFORM LAUNCHED

After almost three years of development, the Alt Linux Team and Basalt SPO have announced the release of “The eleventh platform Alt (P11)“, code-named “Salvia”. This new stable branch of Alt repositories is based on the repository of free programs sisyphus. The P11 platform aims to support the development, testing, distribution, updating, and maintenance of complex solutions ranging from embedded devices to enterprise servers and data centers. It offers pre-built repositories for X86_64, ARM64, and i586 architectures, with plans to support Elbrus E2K architecture in the future. Additionally, efforts are underway to support RISC-V and LOONGARCH architectures.

To evaluate the functionality of the new platform, a set of 22 experimental starting sets are available to provide Live-assembly environments based on Cinnamon, Deepin, Gnome, Icewm, KDE5, LXDE, LXQT, MATE, GNUSTEP, and XFCE. Products such as Alt Server 11, Alt Worker 11, and Alt Education 11 based on the P11 platform are set to be released in the fourth quarter of 2024. The starting assemblies are distributed under the GPL license, while products in the Alt series are available under a licensing agreement that permits free individual use and testing by legal entities, requiring the purchase of a commercial license for actual deployment.

Changes in the P11 platform include:

  • Updates to Linux kernels 6.1.87, 6.6.28, 6.1.90-Rt, and 3.10.0.1160.90.1.VZ7.200.7 (OpenVZ).
