The lightweight distribution MX Linux 23.3 has been released as a result of collaboration between communities associated with Antix and Mepis. This release is based on the Debian package base with enhancements from the Antix project and packages from its own repository. The distribution utilizes the initialization system sysvinit and features tools for system configuration and expansion. Users can download 32- and 64-bit versions of MX Linux with the XFCE desktop (2.1 GB), a 64-bit version with the KDE desktop (2.6 GB), and a version with the Fluxbox window manager (1.7 GB).
Key updates in this release include:
- Syncing with Debian 12.5 package base with updated application versions. The default initialization system remains Sysvinit, with an option to install SystemD. The Linux kernel is updated to version 6.1.90.
- Inclusion of meta-packages like build-essential for developers, allowing compilation and driver assembly in MX Linux.
- Option to choose the system language before the start of the installation process in OEM mode.
- Default integration of multimedia server Pipewire 1.0.
- Ability to remove non-default language packs in local controls.
- Compression option using the ZSTD algorithm in Live-Ramaster.
- Support for SystemD in Live environments through a kernel boot parameter “Init =/Lib/Systemd/Systemd”.
