SPO Foundation Announces Annual Prize Winners

At the Libreplanet 2024 conference, an award ceremony took place, during which the annual prize laureates for the Free Software Awards 2023 were announced by the Free Software Foundation (FSF). The awards were given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of free software and socially significant free projects. The winners received memorable records and letters, as the FSF premium does not include monetary rewards.

The Prize for the Promotion and Development of Free software was awarded to Bruno Haible for his work on the gnulib project, which develops a collection of code for joint use in various GNU packages. Bruno is also known for his contributions to projects such as clisp, GNU M4, Automake, Libiconv, and Gettext.


In the category recognizing projects that have provided societal benefits and addressed important social issues, the award was given to the French project code.gouv.fr. This project assists state institutions in transitioning to the use of free and open-source software, as well as supporting the open-sourcing of projects developed by government entities.


In the category recognizing the outstanding contribution of a new participant to the development of free software, Nick Logozzo, a student at the University of New York, was honored. Nick is known for developing the application set nickvision and contributing to GNOME applications using GTK 4 and Libadwaita.
