Recently, a new tool has been launched that allows users to determine the location of Telegram users utilizing the “people nearby” feature. The tool, known as Close-Circuit Telegram Vision (CCTV), leverages this function for a global user search.
While the primary purpose of the “people nearby” feature is to facilitate locating other Telegram users in close proximity, the CCTV tool enables users to search for individuals remotely around the world who have activated this function.
According to a representative from CCTV, the current protection mechanisms for this function are not effective enough. The project page on Github states that the tool allows real-time tracking of other users for logistics or safety purposes, leading to a shift in how individuals interact with their surroundings.
Testing of the CCTV tool demonstrated its ability to locate Telegram users near specified coordinates. In a test conducted by 404 Media, the tool identified approximately 70 Telegram users, who coincided with those shown by the Telegram app as being nearby the designated point.
Responding to inquiries about the new tool, the Telegram press service clarified that the “People nearby” feature was designed for users interested in sharing their location. This option remains disabled by default, and the location data provided by the CCTV tool is approximate (within 800 meters) and only accessible to users who have expressly chosen to share their location.
According to Telegram’s FAQ, the “People nearby” feature does not allow for a global search of other users. Users who activate this feature are visible only to other Telegram users in the same location.
CCTV explained that the tool utilizes the Telegram API associated with the “People nearby” feature. By inputting arbitrary latitude and longitude coordinates, CCTV can determine user locations without the need for falsifying GPS data.
