In a recent development, Dell has confirmed that data belonging to approximately 49 million customers who have made purchases from the company since 2017 has been leaked.
The data breach affected the Dell portal, which stored details about customer purchases. The leaked information included customer names, physical addresses, details of purchased products such as serial numbers and descriptions, order information, warranty details, and support service contact information. However, Dell has made it clear that sensitive data like payment information, email addresses, and phone numbers were not compromised.
Dell has taken immediate action by informing the affected customers about the breach and has engaged law enforcement agencies and third-party investigation firms to look into the matter. Despite reassuring customers that the risk level is low, the stolen data could potentially be used for targeted attacks. For instance, cybercriminals could use the information to craft convincing messages asking for financial details under the pretense of official communication from Dell based on the customer’s purchase history.
An alarming development is the revelation that the stolen data was advertised for sale on the BreachForums platform on April 28 by a hacker using the pseudonym “Menelik.” The hacker claimed that the database contained information on purchases made between 2017 and 2024. The post on the forum was later removed, hinting that the database might have been sold to a different party.
Given this situation, customers who have purchased Dell products are advised to remain vigilant and watch out for any suspicious activities that may indicate unauthorized access or misuse of their personal information.
