TAILS 6.3 and Tor Browser 13.0.15 Released

Recently, Tails announced the release of a specialized distribution known as Tails 6.3 (The Amnesic Incognito Live System). This distribution is based on the Debian 12 package base and comes equipped with the GNOME 43 desktop. It is designed for anonymous internet access, with the Tor system providing the means for anonymous browsing. By default, all connections not going through the Tor network are blocked by the packet filter. User data is stored encrypted for data persistence between launches. The ISO-image for download is 1 GB and can be used in live-mode. More information can be found here.

In this new version, some key updates include:

  • Tor Browser has been updated to version 13.0.15.
  • The Thunderbird PDF-examiner has been disabled due to a vulnerability (CVE-2024-4367) that allowed the execution of JavaScript code when processing certain fonts. PDF documents in Thunderbird will now be opened using an external Document Viewer application.
  • After an automatic update, the default button in the dialogue that appears is “restart later” instead of “restart now.”
  • A previous issue with setting up certain printers has been resolved, where parameters were stored in constant storage.
  • A delay in switching between the Gnome system login screen and the desktop has been addressed, especially when MAC address anonymization was not possible.

In the latest version of Tor Browser (13.0.15), there has been synchronization with the code base of firefox 115.11.0 ESR, which has addressed 7 vulnerabilities. The issue of the indexdb catalog being used in private mode has been resolved when closing the browser. Additionally, the HomePage module is now used to check the new identifier, and there is a focus on authentication requests for onion services. More details can be found here.
