The latest free distribution release, Openindiana 2024.04, has been presented, replacing the discontinued Openslaris binary distribution by Oracle. Openindiana is based on the project Illumos, offering a working environment with continued development in technologies from Openslaris by the Illumos project. Three types of ISO images are available for download: server edition with console applications (970 GB), minimum assembly (470 MB), and assembly with the Mate graphic environment (1.9 GB). The main changes in Openindiana 2024.04 include:
- Approximately 1230 packages released, with around 900 related to Python and 200 to Perl.
- The Mate user environment has been updated to the 1.28 branch, incorporating stability improvements from other distributions. More details can be found here.
- Updated versions of various software such as Libreoffice 24.2, Pulseaudio 17, Alpine 2.26, Firefox 125, and Thunderbird 125.
- Updated LLVM/Clang 18, Node.js 22, Golang 1.22, with many packages compiled using GCC 13.
- Added the Fail2ban package for protection against flooding and password selection attempts.
- Introduced the HPN SSH package, including OpenSSH with patches to improve data transmission performance over the network.
- Transitioned packages from LibjpeG6 to LibjpeG8-Turbo library for default distribution inclusion.
- Implemented ZSTD algorithm for compressing loading images.
