Kevin Bentley, a key figure in the development of the popular game Descent 3, has taken the reins at Outrage Entertainment, where he is leading a team of enthusiasts to revive and continue the development of the game. The project’s initial texts have been unearthed by Bentley, who is now working on assembling a dedicated team. The game’s code, written in C++, is open-source under the MIT license.
Descent 3, originally released in 1999, is a unique blend of first-person shooter and flight simulator set in open and closed spaces. The game supports both single-player missions and multiplayer battles. A recent update, known as the “1.5 Patch”, includes long-awaited changes to the code written in the 1990s, with versions available for Linux, MacOS, and Windows.
Despite the updates, the release does not include music or libraries for displaying video in ACM and MVE formats, as the rights do not belong to Outrage Entertainment. To address this, missing libraries will be replaced with plugins, and future video content will be formatted using open libraries. The team’s priorities include providing assembly options for different platforms, establishing infrastructure for continuous integration testing, cleaning up code, and eliminating components of the old version management system.
