The project PIVPN, initially created to streamline the process of setting up a VPN server using Raspberry Pi, recently announced the release of its final version 4.6 after 8 years of development. The developer decided to transition the project to an archival state and discontinue any further updates.
The decision to end the project was motivated by a lack of interest in further development, as the tool had fulfilled its purpose and was no longer deemed relevant in the current technological landscape. The developer cited the emergence of other projects that offer more advanced solutions as a contributing factor to the project’s closure. Additionally, the developer expressed reluctance to transfer project rights to others due to a lack of trustworthy candidates and a belief that they should not dictate who continues the development.
Users interested in further development of PIVPN are encouraged to create a fork of the project and continue development under a different name. PIVPN, which provides scripts for easy creation of VPN servers using Raspberry Pi boards, supports VPN creation using OpenVPN and Wireguard on various operating systems such as Raspbian, Raspberry Pi OS, Ubuntu Server, Dietpi, and Alpine Linux.
The tool was designed to allow users, even those without technical expertise, to quickly set up a secure VPN server with optimal settings by executing a single command. Users could then manage clients using the PIVPN command line utility to add, delete, and view customer information, enhancing their online security and privacy when connecting through potentially unsecured networks.
