YouTube announced on March 18 about the introduction of a new tool in Creator Studio that requires content creators to inform the audience when using realistic content created with AI that can easily be mistaken for real people, places, or events.
According to the announcement made in November, this information will be displayed as marks in an extended description or directly on the video player screen to increase transparency and build trust between content creators and their audience.
The new mark aims to enhance transparency in content and build trust with the audience by disclosing information about the use of AI-generated realistic content. Examples of content that require information disclosure include digital face replacements, changing real events or places, and creating realistic scenes of fictional large events.
YouTube will not require authors to mark clearly unrealistic content created using AI, such as animations, color adjustments, special effects, and visual enhancements like beauty filters. More noticeable marks will be displayed on videos covering sensitive topics like health, news, elections, and finances.
New marks will start appearing on all YouTube platforms in the coming weeks, beginning with the mobile app and then expanding to PC and TV. There may be sanctions for intentional concealment of synthetic content use, and in severe cases, YouTube reserves the right to add notes independently.
