FLAC Sound Codec Proposed as Standard

The IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) Committee, responsible for developing protocols and architecture for the Internet, has proposed the standardization of the free sound codec FLAC (free lossless audio codec) developed by the Xiph.org community. The final RFC for the FLAC codec, based on 14 editions, is currently in the editing process and is expected to be completed within the next 3-6 months. Another specification for the Matroska media container format (” .MKV “) is also in the preparation stage for the RFC list.

FLAC Codec ensures the preservation of sound quality by using lossless compression methods that maintain the original sound flow’s identity. The compression techniques employed reduce the size of the audio stream without compromising quality by up to 50-60%. FLAC is a free streaming format that allows for open source libraries for encoding and decoding functions without any usage restrictions or limitations on derivative works. The reference libraries for FLAC are available under the BSD license on GitHub.
