According to Arkham Intelligence, the US government has transferred bitcoins amounting to $922 million from two cryptocurrency wallets. These funds were confiscated from hackers who targeted the Bitfinex crypto exchange in 2016. The transfers took place on February 28, a day when Bitcoin’s value surged above $60,000 for the first time since November 2021. Arkham Intelligence reported that on that day, one wallet sent 1 BTC, followed by a transfer of 2.817 BTC ($172.74 million) to unknown addresses. Another wallet saw a transaction of 0.01 BTC, followed by a transfer of 12,267 BTC ($748.46 million). The combined value of the bitcoins moved from these two wallets totaled approximately $922 million. These funds had been confiscated by the US government from the Bitfinex hackers involved in the 2016 cyberattack. In a related development, in February 2022, American authorities arrested Ilya Lichtenstein and his wife Heather Morgan, seizing over 94,000 BTC (equivalent to $3.6 billion). They were later found guilty of laundering these funds in August 2023. |
