Leap Year Shuts Down NZ Gas Stations

New Zealand Gas Stations Face Work Interruptions Due to Leap Year Software Glitch

New Zealand gas stations faced work interruptions on February 29, as reported by Bloomberg. The issue arose due to software inability to process the date on February 29, a leap day that occurs every four years.

Major fuel companies like Z Energy, Allied Petroleum, and Gull experienced automatic pump disconnections nationwide, leading to stations with service personnel being the only ones able to process payments.

A spokesperson from Gull suggested that the failure was likely due to the leap year complication. “Our initial assessment indicates a link to the leap year, but we are awaiting confirmation from our technology provider,” the spokesperson mentioned.

New Zealand, among the first countries to welcome a new day, observes February 29 to adjust for the Earth’s orbit and the additional time required for a full revolution around the Sun beyond 365 days.

Z Energy also addressed the matter on their website, stating that a third-party payment system issue was impacting operations nationwide. The company assured that they are actively collaborating with the payment services supplier to resolve the problem promptly.
