In an era when energy efficiency becomes a critical aspect of microchip development, the new startup Efficient Computer promises a revolution with the architecture of the Fabric processor.
According to the Efficient Computer Fabric, it represents the productivity equal to current processors with much less power consumption. According to the company, Fabric is 100 times more effective than the best built-in processors in von Neumann architecture, and 1,000 times more economical than the most energy-intensive graphic processors.
Invasory development is based on seven-year-olds research at the University of Carnegies Mellon and is an architecture optimized for parallelism “from scratch”. Fabric is based on a simplified, reconfigured architecture of data streams, which allows you to execute the code simultaneously on a lot of parallel computing elements.
The advantages of this approach are that it is parallelism that is the key to increasing productivity while maintaining a low level of energy consumption. An effective network inside the chip binds parallel computing elements, providing high processor performance.
The design of architecture is implemented in the test system on the Monza crystal
Efficient Computer also adapted its software stack to the main built-in programming languages, including C, C ++, Tensorflow framework and some applications on RUST, which allows the application developers to cross their code to FABRIC architecture quickly. Nevertheless, the need for cross-compilation of software can be an obstacle to widespread, especially in the consumer sector.
Initial target markets for Fabric processors include specialized sectors, such as medical devices, civilian infrastructure monitoring, satellites, defense and safety, where energy efficiency is the most valuable indicator.
The project is already worth a funding of $16 million from Eclipse Ventures, which is probably aimed at launching the first Fabric chips. The startup reports on the conclusion of agreements with unscrewed partners and plans to start deliveries of products in early 2025. Efficient Computer, without revealing all the details of the new architecture, promises a new era in the field of energy-efficient calculations, which can radically change many industries from information technologies to space industry.
