Armbian 24.2 Now Available

Armbian has recently published its latest issue of the Linux Distribution, providing a compact systemic environment for various single-board computers with processors based on ARM, RISC-V, and X86 architectures. This includes models from various brands such as RASPBERRY PI, ODDORID, Orange Pi, Banana Pi, Helios64, Pine64, Nanopi, and Cubieboard, utilizing processors from Allwinner, AMLOGIC, Action, Freescale/NXP, Marvell Armada, Rockchip, Radxa, and Samsung Exynos.

The assemblies are formed using the DEBIAN and UBUNTU package bases but the environment is fully re-architected using Armbian’s own assembly system with optimizations to decrease size, improve productivity, and incorporate additional protection measures. Features like mounting the /Var/log section using ZRAM, storing it in compressed form, and dumping data to the drive daily or at the end of work are implemented, along with mounting the /TMP section using TMPFS.

The project supports over 30 options for Linux kernels for various ARM and ARM64 platforms and provides an SDK to simplify the creation of systemic images, packages, and distributions. ZSWAP is utilized for swapping and two-factor authentication is an available option for SSH access. The inclusion of the BOX64 emulator allows the running of X86 architecture-based programs and pre-compiled packages are available for launching user environments based on different desktop environments like KDE, GNOME, BUDGIE, CINMON, i3WM, Mate, XFCE, and XMONAD.

The latest features in this release include:

  • Added support for Orange Zero3, Radxa Rock S0, and Asus Tinker-Edge-R, along with Xiaomi Mi10 smartphone support.
  • Improved support for Mixtile Blade 3 and optimized HDMI performance on Khadas VIM1S and VIM4 boards, with added support for the Linux 5.15 kernel from Amlogic.
  • Enhanced patch support for Rockchip-based boards and provision for using the Linux 6.7 kernel on Rockchip RK3588 boards, with ported patches for Rockchip 32b/64b.
  • Revamped DNS resolution with Systemd-ReSolved separated as a standalone package.
  • Updated U-boot
