User environment developers LXQT (Qt Lightweight Desktop Environment) recently announced their plans to transition to using the QT6 library and the Wayland Protocol. The migration of all components of LXQT to QT6 is currently the main focus of the project, with plans to discontinue QT5 support once the migration is complete.
Preliminary results of the transition to QT6 will be showcased in the LXQT 2.0.0 release, expected in April of this year. Along with internal changes, the new release will introduce the Fancy Menu applications menu by default. This new menu offers a consolidated display of all applications, categorization of applications, and an enhanced program search feature.
The developers emphasized that the implementation of Wayland support will not bring about any major conceptual changes to LXQT. The user environment will remain modular and retain its classic desktop organization. LXQT will be able to work with various composite managers based on the wlroots library, which provides essential functions for organizing composite manager operations on Wayland. Compatibility tests with composite managers such as Labwc, Wayfire, Kwin_Wayland, SWAY, and HYPRLAND have been conducted, with the best performance observed when using Labwc.
Currently, QT6 has already been fully translated.
